Thank you for printing the opinion pieces from Bill Knight.  I thoroughly enjoy reading his attempts to defend totally indefensible positions.  In a recent column he leads with the thought that “Republicans hope to give $10 trillion to the rich.”  This may be an effective emotional appeal but it is factually incorrect and at best dishonest.
The assumption is that the government has money to give away. The fact is that our government does not have any money that it does not take away from somebody who earned it.  A more correct statement is that the “Republicans are not going to take $10 trillion from the American people.”  Our government needs to remember that every dollar they spend has to be taken away from some American.  It seems that our elected representatives have forgotten that fact. Mr. Knight throws 39% out like it was nothing, but our government does not have any “right” to $0.39 out of every $1.00 that any American makes.
Then when he quotes from the Citizens for Tax Justice, all credibility is gone. The CTJ is a self described liberal group that fights to “require the rich to pay their fair share.” No bias there.
For the record, according to the latest numbers from the IRS, the top 1% of income earners pay 39% of income taxes. The top 25% pay 86% of income taxes. Why should we be happy when someone else’s taxes go up? Let’s be happy when ours go down!
